Industrial production fell for the second consecutive month, registering a 0.7 percent shrinkage in September. Compared to the same month last year, the rate is up 0.4 percent. Year to date, the growth is 1.1 percent and the 12-month total is 2.3 percent. The data can be found in monthly industrial survey PIM, released today (Nov. 1) by official statistics agency IBGE.

The study shows that 21 of the 26 industrial branches surveyed faced a decline. The sector is 2.4 percent below pre-pandemic levels in February 2020 and 18.7 percent below the record level reached in May 2011.

In the view of survey manager André Macedo, there is a reduction in the pace of industrial production. “This is clear not only in these two months of decline in a row, but also in the higher frequency of negative rates in the last four months, with three negative variations. With the latest results and a well disseminated decline in September 2022, we understand there has been a loss in the pace of production in recent months,” he remarked.

The largest negative influence among the activities was seen in food products (2.9%), followed by metallurgy (7.6%). There were also declines in beverages (4.6%) and wood products (8.8%).

Of the five activities with an increase from August to September, the extractive industry (1.8%) and machinery and equipment (2.2%) were the main impacts in September.
