Brazil's employed population surpassed 100 mi in 2023

In 2023, the employed Brazilian population reached 100.7 million, marking a 1.1 percent increase from 2022 (99.6 million) and a 12.3 percent rise from 2012 (89.7 million).

Compared to 2022, the total working-age population grew by 0.9 percent, reaching an estimated 174.8 million people in 2023. The employment rate for that year was estimated at 57.6 percent.

The data were released on Friday (Jun. 21) by the government´s statistics agency IBGE.

In 2023, the percentage of private sector employees with a formal contract increased to 37.4 percent of the employed population, up from 36.3 percent in 2022. The number of these workers in 2023 reached 37.7 million, the highest, since the beginning of this time series.

Employees without a formal contract in the private sector accounted for 13.3 percent in 2023, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points from the previous year. Despite this drop, the figure remains one of the highest since the beginning of this time series.

Public sector employees, including civil servants and the military, maintained a steady share of around 12 percent in 2023, totaling approximately 12.2 million workers, with no significant variations over the series.

Domestic workers remained stable at 6 percent of the employed population in 2023, the same percentage as in 2022.
