Lula signs decree raising grant for athletes by 10.86%
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva welcomed athletes who will be representing Brazil at the Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, France, to the Planalto presidential palace in Brasília on Thursday (Jul. 11). At the meeting, the president signed a decree adjusting the Bolsa Atleta—a program that turns 20 in 2024 and had not been adjusted for 14 years—by 10.86 percent.
“When we decided to create Bolsa Atleta, it was because Brazilian culture often doesn’t take into account that, before people became important, famous, and got private sponsorship, many didn’t even have a pair of sneakers to play their sport in,” he said.
The Olympic Games begin on July 26 and run until August 11. The Brazilian delegation includes 277 athletes—153 women and 12 men. The Paralympics will take place from August 28 to September 8, with 124 Brazilian athletes.
The benefit
As it stands today, over 9 thousand sportspeople receive the Bolsa Atleta, which ranges from BRL 370 to 15 thousand. The new amounts should begin to be paid in August for all categories: Student, Grassroots, National, International, and Olympic/Paralympic.
