Rousseff inaugurates housing project in Amazonas
President Dilma Rousseff has announced on Friday (Feb. 14), in Manaus, capital city of Amazonas, the conclusion of the greatest enterprise under the My House My Life Program. The housing project includes 5,384 residential units which are being assigned to families with an income lower than $668. This has been the project’s second stage, and had an investment of $113 million from the federal government and $17 million from the state government. Dwellings have a space from 35.89 to 40.41 square meters, with two bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom, a kitchen and an external laundry room.
The infrastructure of the enterprise is complete with paving, sanitation, sewage, drainage systems, electric energy and access to public transportation. Rousseff said that the program provides housing for those who would not be able to do live in their own house without the government’s financial support, with monthly payments cheaper than a rental.
The president further stated that the initiative will go on as long as there are people who need their own house. “We started with 1 million [units] in 2009. In 2011 we’ve increased it to 2.75 million. So gradually the project’s increasing in number and quality, and everybody will be able to have their own house.”
Rousseff also announced that $175 million are yet to be invested in urban mobility works in the state of Amazonas, in a partnership with the federal government, the state and the city governments, with the purpose of reforming dedicated bus lanes, “in order to make traffic faster, make people go to work from home, from home to school, and from home to their leisure activities more quickly,” the president stressed.
