Data from Brazil’s association for private health insurance FenaSaúde show that health insurance plans in Brazil now cover more than 71 million people. The figures were published today (Apr. 29) in the 5th Report of Economic and Financial Indicators by the same institution, which represents 31 insurers, accounting for 25.4 million health plan users. The statistics date from September 2013 and ultimately come from the National Regulatory Agency for Private Health Insurance and Plans (“ANS”).

The survey reveals that 97.1% of health plan holders insured one of the providers affiliated with FenaSaúde are covered by full health insurance plans, complete with ambulance service and hospital care. In the Brazilian private health care sector as a whole, these cases account for 93.1% of the contracts.

The data further indicate that 31.9% of Brazilians over the age of 80 are covered by health plans or insurance, followed only by the group from 30 to 39 years old (32.7%).

Most health plan holders are concentrated in Brazil’s Southeast region: 10.9 million customers. Also, 7.5 million people in the region are insured by exclusively dental health plans.
