Santa Catarina reports more than $234 million in losses
The emergency management service(Defesa Civil) in the state of Santa Catarina has estimated losses in excess of $234 million caused by rain storms in the state. Over 460,000 people were impacted by flooding, which left two people dead and 28 injured.
Forty-two counties are reported to have been impacted, out of which 37 have declared a state of emergency, and two were declared as disaster areas. According to preliminary assessments, 53,000 properties were damaged or destroyed.
The state government has announced $900,000 in funds to help local governments rent machinery and buy fuel. Emergency management has provided more than $450,000 in disaster relief items including personal care, cleaning materials, bottled water, and food baskets.
The Center for Information on Environmental Resources and Hydrometeorology of Santa Catarina forecasts more rain for Tuesday (Jun 24) in isolated areas across four regions of the state.
