Brazil has over 20 million single mothers
There are 67 million mothers in Brazil, according to a survey by Data Popular institute. Out of these, 31% are single and 46% carry out paid work. Aged 47 on average, 55% of mothers are middle class, 25% are upper class, and 20% are lower class. Just over a third of adult children (36%) financially help their mothers.
Also according to the study, 21st century mothers are less conservative and more into technology than their 20th century counterparts. Among 20th century mothers, 75% believed that a person could only be fulfilled if they had a family of their own. But this attitude is true of 66% of the next generation of mothers. In the opinion of 58% of mothers in the past generation, taking care of meals was a role for women, whereas this view is shared by only 45% of 21st century mothers.
The past generation also saw as chiefly a man's role to earn the money to support the household (55%), and a woman's responsibility to do housework (60%). Among the younger ones, 43% share the notion of men as the breadwinner and 48% see women as homemakers.
Regarding technology, 35% of mothers in the current generation said they cannot imagine life without the Internet, compared to 14% of those who experienced motherhood before the 2000s. 63% of the 21st century mothers said they are keen on cutting-edge technology products. Among older mothers, that number was 38%.
