Unemployment up 6.7% in six metropolitan areas
The survey covers the metropolitan areas of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Porto Alegre.
The unemployment rate was 5.3% at the beginning of the year and maintained an upward trend, going to 5.9% in February and 6.2% in March. With the result for May, the cumulative unemployment growth stands at 1.4 percentage points so far this year.
The latest monthly unemployment rate is a peak for May results since 2010, when it reached 7.5%. Since then, the over-the-year change for the month had been negative until now.
The employed and non-labor force populations have remained stable both over the year and over the previous month. The number of workers with formal employment contracts in the private sector dropped 1.8% compared to 2014. Compared to April this year, it has remained stable.
The metropolitan area with the highest unemployment rate was Salvador (11.3%), followed by Recife, (8.5%), São Paulo (6.9%), Belo Horizonte (5.7%), Porto Alegre (5.6%), and Rio de Janeiro (5%).
