The death toll caused by heavy rains that hit the state of São Paulo has reached 18 since last Friday, reported São Paulo authorities. According to the local Civil Defense, of the total number of deaths, seven are children. Nine people were wounded and five are missing. Approximately 500 families are displaced or homeless.

The fatalities occurred in Várzea Paulista (5), Francisco Morato (4), Embu das Artes (3), Franco da Rocha (3), Arujá (1), Jaú (1), and Ribeirão Preto (1). Most deaths were caused by landslides.

After flying over the most affected areas by the rain in Greater São Paulo area, Governor João Doria expressed his “solidarity to the families and friends” of the victims, and announced he was releasing BRL 15 million ($ 2.7 million dollars) to help the affected cities.

The Civil Defense warned that heavy rain could continue to fall throughout the state, with lightnings and strong winds, and advised people to remain vigilant. In vulnerable areas there is a risk of landslides, flooding and overflowing rivers.

In case of emergency, one must call the Civil Defense (199) or the Fire Department (193).
