Death toll caused by rains in Pernambuco rises to 126
The number of fatalities due to heavy rains in Pernambuco has risen to 126, as reported by the state government yesterday (Jun 2). The number increased after firefighters had found five bodies, two of them in Vila dos Milagres. One of the victims was a child, found three meters underground.
Two other bodies were found in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in the metropolitan region of capital Recife. One of them was a woman. The fifth body of a victim carried by the flood was located in Limoeiro.
The total number of homeless people has risen to 9,302 people. According to Pernambuco government, they have been brought to 66 shelters in 27 municipalities.
Firefighters continue the search for two missing people in Camaragibe and Paulista.
According to the state government, 403 firefighters from Pernambuco and other states are involved in the search, as well as members of the Armed Forces, the Civil Defense, the state’s Social Defense Secretariat, and municipal bodies.
