Brazilian minister: “Dark history of dictatorship must be told”
Brazil’s Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship Silvio Almeida advocated policies aimed at guaranteeing reparation to victims of the dictatorship in the country.
The minister is currently in Argentina to participate in the 3rd World Human Rights Forum 2023. On a visit to the Memory Museum, on Wednesday (Mar. 22), Almeida declared that the dark history of the dictatorship must be told.
“The struggle of a nation is key to ensuring that the darkest aspects of history can be told and overcome. We must make sure that the message is passed on to future generations, saying it will not be tolerated,” he declared.
The Argentine museum, he argued, casts light on the issue by dealing at once with both the present and the past. “I hope this serves as an example for Brazil, and our region, Latin America. I am very happy to be in a place like this and to feel part of such a beautiful process of justice and reparation,” he went on to say.
At the forum, the Brazilian government should join the panel People’s Struggle for Dignity in the New Democratic Contexts. Minister Silvio Almeida is expected to meet with authorities from both Argentina and Mercosur.
