After signing a new protocol for Bolivia's accession to MERCOSUR on Friday (July 17), member countries of the bloc – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela – signed an agreement to admit Suriname and Guyana as associated states.

The decision was made at the 48th edition of the now-ongoing Summit of Heads of State of MERCOSUR and Associated States in Brasília. The meeting marks the end of Brazil's rotating presidency over the bloc in the first half of 2015, which will now pass on to Paraguay.

With the new admissions, all South American countries now have membership in the bloc, whether as full members or as associated states.
