Argentine president to meet Bolsonaro in Brazil
Argentine President Mauricio Macri will meet with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for the first time, on Wednesday (Jan. 16) in Brasília. In addition to bilateral issues relevant to both countries, topics should include the aggravation of the situation in Venezuela and Nicaragua.
Like Brazil, Argentina signed a joint declaration with the Lima Group, formed by 14 nations, not recognizing the legitimacy of the second tenure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and advocating new elections.
Yesterday (13), the Lima Group—Mexico not included—released a declaration opposing the incarceration of Juan Gauaibó, chairman of Venezuela’s National Constituent Assembly and a member of the opposition.
Macri is facing mounting tension in Argentina with severe criticism stemming from high inflation and the depreciation of the local currency. Last year, the money resorted to loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which imposed demands on the government, like spending cuts and curbing measures.
