Brazil Congress to form commission on Venezuelan crisis
The Brazilian Congress will create a commission to discuss the crisis in Venezuela with leaders from Latin American countries. The group is expected to meet in Panama, seat of the Latin American Parliament (Parlatino). The details are being worked out.
The decision was made after the visit of Juan Guaidó, Venezuela’s self-proclaimed interim president, on Thursday (Feb. 28), where he met with Congress members. The information was announced by Senator Nelsinho Trad, chairman of the Foreign Relations and Armed Forces Commission.
“We plan to meet in a neutral country, like Panama, where Parlatino’s headquarters are located. Guaidó said he is a member of Parlatino, which brings together Latin American lawmakers, and added that this institution exists exactly mediate actions of this nature,” Trad declared.
“We’re scheduling the meeting to be held in Panama at the next Foreign Relations Commission meeting,” said the senator, who did not mention the date for the commission meeting.
Greater cause
Trad argues that the measures devised by the Latin American countries are the best solutions to curb the Venezuelan crisis. “We understand that this is the path for a diplomatic answer where we, alongside several Latin American Congress members, will show support for the restoration of democracy and free elections in Venezuela. Guaidó has already provided the contact information of a Venezuelan parliamentarian so we can arrange this meeting in Panama,” he said.
Guaidó, the senator went on to say, said he does not plan to apply for political asylum in other countries as a result of threats by Venezuelan authorities who do not recognize his position. “He said his cause is above any fears concerning himself and his family.”
Guaidó visited the Brazilian Congress after a meeting with President Jair Bolsonaro at the Planalto presidential palace. In an address after the meeting, he thanked the support of the Brazilian government in providing humanitarian aid for the neighboring country and described the assembly with Bolsonaro as a milestone for the restoration of ties between the two countries.
