The limit for duty-free purchases for travelers coming to Brazil on land or river will go from $300 to $500 per person on January 1, 2020.

Last month, President Jair Bolsonaro had announced he would raise the limit, which would benefit those crossing the borders shared with Paraguay, for instance.

Next year, the government will also expand the purchase limit at airport free shops, from the current $500 to $1 thousand.

In addition to this limit, travelers also have a $500 limit for purchases overseas. Thus, those traveling abroad by plane will have a total purchase limit of $1,500.

Amounts surpassing these thresholds may be taxed by the Federal Revenue Service.
