A memorandum of understanding was signed Thursday (Mar. 31) between Brazil and Australia on work and vacation visas for Brazilian students going on exchange programs or planning or doing so in the country, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Relations reported.
Starting on July 1 this year, when it comes into force, the deal should allow every year 5 hundred young Brazilians aged 18–30 to stay in Australia for up to 12 months, with permission to work and study.
As it stands today, Brazilians seeking to work or study in Australia are required to demonstrate a prior link with the employer or educational institution.
Brazilians make up the eighth largest group of foreign students in Australia—some 9 thousand students, according to the ministry.
Brazil also has similar agreements with Germany, France, and New Zealand.
