Rio court sentences two for killing Congolese man

The Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice have sentenced two men for the murder of Congolese Moïse Mugenvi Kabagambe in January 2022. Aleson Cristiano de Oliveira Fonseca was sentenced to 23 years, seven months, and 10 days, while Fábio Pirineus da Silva received a sentence of 19 years, six months, and 20 days. The sentences were announced on Friday (Mar. 14).
The two men were convicted of triple-qualified homicide for a futile motive, cruel means, and the victim’s inability to defend himself. According to the Jury Sentencing Council, both will serve their sentences in a closed regime.
The indictment from the Rio Court of Justice states that Kabagambe was punched, beaten, and kicked by Fonseca and Silva following an argument at the kiosk where the Congolese man worked, located on the Barra da Tijuca waterfront, on January 24, 2022.
The victim was knocked down and immobilized by another defendant, Brendon Alexander Luz da Silva, while being beaten by the two men sentenced on Friday. Additionally, Kabagambe’s hands and feet were bound with wires. The crime was captured by a security camera at the kiosk.
Brendon Silva had his name removed from the original case. He has not yet been tried, as he is appealing the court’s decision, which, after reviewing the evidence, determined that the defendants should be tried by a jury.
