Brazil issues security alert for its citizens in Venezuela

Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Relations has issued a consular alert for Brazilians in Venezuela. Following the proclamation of Nicolás Maduro as re-elected president, demonstrators took to the streets of capital Caracas amid calls from the opposition and the international community for the full vote counts to be released.

In the statement, the ministry asks Brazilians living in, traveling through, or scheduled to travel to, Venezuela to keep themselves informed about the security situation in the areas where they are located and to avoid crowds.

“The Embassy of Brazil in Caracas remains vigilant regarding the situation facing Brazilian citizens in the country and, in the event of an emergency involving its nationals, provides its consular service on +58 414-3723337 (also WhatsApp),” the note reads.

Also according to the alert, the general consular duty of the Ministry of Foreign Relations can be contacted on +55 (61) 98260-0610.

The day after the elections, the Venezuelan government decided to expel diplomatic representatives from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay who contested the results of the polls.
