Sweden to purchase Brazilian military aircraft
The Swedish Ministry of Defense has announced the choice of the Embraer C-390 Millennium as the country’s new tactical transport aircraft. The decision by yet another member country of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) marks the first acquisition of the C-390 in northern Europe, underscoring Sweden’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities with state-of-the-art aircraft, says Embraer.
“After several countries belonging to the European Union and NATO selected the C-390, this decision confirms the fact that our multi-mission aircraft represents a tremendous advance in operational capability over the tactical transport aircraft of the previous generation,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defesa & Segurança.
“The aircraft is gradually being recognized by the world’s most advanced air forces, like the Swedish Air Force. This choice encourages us to offer our customers the tactical transport they need to carry out their most challenging missions with unparalleled versatility, reliability, and performance,” he went on to say.
“Sweden’s acquisition of the C-390 will not only strengthen national defense, but also increase interoperability with allied forces, while benefiting from the synergy found in Europe in terms of training facilities, support, and logistics,” Embraer stated.
Sweden is the sixth European nation to choose the aircraft—after Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Portugal. The C-390 has also been acquired by Brazil and South Korea. Since entering service with the Brazilian Air Force in 2019 and the Portuguese Air Force in 2023, the fleet in operation has amassed over 15 thousand flight hours, 93 percent operational availability, and mission completion rates above 99 percent, showcasing exceptional productivity in the category, the company reports.
