Police carry out operation against illegal mining in Pará state
The Federal Police reported on Tuesday (Jul. 12) that six ferries and engines used in illegal mining activities were destroyed during an operation carried out last weekend in the Baú Indigenous Land, an area close to the municipality of Novo Progresso, in the state of Pará. The action is part of Operation Guardians of the Biome.
According to the police, one of the ferries was equipped with a television and air conditioning. The vessel was valued at BRL 2 million.
In addition, about 80 grams of gold illegally extracted from the área and ammunition were seized by the corporation. During the operation, a gold miner was fined BRL 1 million ($ 184 thousand dollars) by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources - Ibama.
