Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party (PL), submitted his bid for re-election as president yesterday (Aug 9). His running mate is retired General Walter Braga Netto (PL), former defense minister.

The incumbent declared his assets to total BRL 2,317,554.73, down from the BRL 2.9 million declared in 2018. Much of the amount comes in the form of real estate—including three houses with a total declared value of BRL 1.1 million and an apartment worth BRL 240.9 thousand. Another slice comprises deposits in current accounts (BRL 316 thousand) and savings accounts (BRL 591 thousand).

The candidate for vice-president, Braga Netto, reported he owns BRL 1,631,986.81—mostly in real estate and stocks. Details are available on the electoral court’s platform online.

As part of his registration, Bolsonaro attached a 48-page government proposal, which details actions taken by his administration and points that should be strengthened in a possible second term. He and his running mate are under coalition Pelo bem do Brasil (“For the good of Brazil”), made up of the PL, the Republicans, and the Progressives (PP).

Calendar

Bolsonaro’s registration brings the number of presidential hopefuls who have filed for registration to nine. Candidacies must be submitted by August 15. Until then, parties are still allowed to withdraw names already approved at party conventions.

The electoral authorities have until September 12 to consider all presidential candidacies submitted for compliance and possible restrictions.

The campaign period, during which hopefuls may effectively ask for votes and publicize their numbers, begins on August 16. The first round of the 2022 election is scheduled to take place on October 2, and a second round may be held on October 30.
