Jair Renan, son of Bolsonaro, charged with money laundering
Federal District prosecutors have filed charges against Jair Renan Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, for the crimes of money laundering, misrepresentation, and use of false documents within the scope of Operation Nexus, conducted by the Civil Police of the Federal District.
According to investigations, Jair Renan falsified financial results of his company Bolsonaro Jr. Eventos e Mídia to obtain a loan from Santander bank, which was not repaid. The criminal charges are kept secret. The financial institution also filed a lawsuit to collect the debt and obtained a favorable decision for the payment of BRL 360 thousand.
The filing of charges was revealed by the newspaper O Globo and was confirmed by Agência Brasil. The accusation states that Jair Renan’s company revenue was inflated to BRL 4 million. When contacted, prosecutors reported they have submitted a statement in the case and are awaiting a court decision. If the charges are accepted, a criminal action begins.
In February, the police presented the final report of the investigation, indicting Jair Renan and his shooting instructor, Maciel Alves, who is now also charged. The indictment was for the same crimes. Last August, the police executed search and seizure warrants against both.
Lawyer Admar Gonzaga, representing Jair Renan in the case, criticized the leakage of charges to the press. “These leaks have caused what is called “strepitus fori,” very detrimental to the defense, due process, presumption of innocence, and thus, to the image of those who have the right to defend themselves.”
In legal jargon, “strepitus fori” refers to the embarrassment caused by proceedings, with negative effects on the accused. “Society loses its status of legality and humanity with this situation. We need to evolve,” Gonzaga added.
Agência Brasil contacted lawyer Pedrinho Villard, who represents Maciel Alves in the case. The defense of the shooting instructor stated they will not comment on the filing of charges.
