Lower house speaker Eduardo Cunha rejects resignation

Lower house speaker Eduardo Cunha announced today (Aug. 21) in São Paulo that he will not resign from the command of the Chamber of Deputies. He was charged yesterday (Aug. 20) by the Federal Prosecution Office (MPF) in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for the crimes of bribery and money laundering.
During the event promoted by Labor Union, (Força Sindical) Cunha said that resignation is not on his dictionary and “will not submit it." "No one can be convicted in advance. I'm utterly peaceful. Nothing will change my behavior. There is no point in any speculation about what I will or will not do. I'll not give up any right. There's no possibility of not continuing in charge of the House," said the member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB).
In the allegation submitted to the Supreme Court, prosecutor-general Rodrigo Janot mentioned that Eduardo Cunha received bribes from foreign companies and shell companies
In the complaint, Janot also requests from the house speaker the payment of $80 million for the economic harm caused to Petrobrás. This is the first complaint filed against a congressman under Operation Car Wash.
Cunha responded to the complaint "vehemently" and considered the arguments presented by Janot to be just “deductions”. In a statement released yesterday, after the complaint was filed, he claims to be innocent and relieved. "I was chosen to be investigated and, as it seems, I have also been chosen to be denounced." Cunha criticized the Workers' Party (PT) and the now-ruling government, who he claims to be responsible for the complaints he has received.
