President Dilma Rousseff attended Wednesday (Oct. 14), in São Carlos, São Paulo, the ceremony to deliver 806 housing units of the Minha Casa, Minha Vida affordable housing program and she defended using the money collected from taxes to finance the program.

"What has the government used the money we've levied on taxes for? To ensure that families may have access to housing," declared the president in her address after delivering the keys to the beneficiary families.

Rousseff pointed out that before the program—created in 2009—Brazil had only "quite small and restricted" affordable housing programs and they did not meet the demand.

"When we launched the Minha Casa, Minha Vida program, there were people everywhere to say it would not work," she further announced. "Today, we are showing that it has worked out right and will continue working."

According to the President, the program reached the amount of 4 million units delivered or contracted, and stage 3 will be launched, despite the economic difficulties faced by the country.

"We are running into a period of difficulties," Roussef acknowledged. "But we will ensure the continuity of Minha Casa, Minha Vida program. In addition, we are taking all measures to recover the country's economic growth, to generate more employment and income," she added.

Besides the units in the housing complex Planalto Verde in São Carlos, the president simultaneously attended, by video conferencing, the ceremony to deliver housing units in Leme and Itanhaém, São Paulo, and in João Monlevade, Minas Gerais, and in Campo Formoso, Bahia, totaling 3,422 units.

According to the Ministry of Cities, the projects received more than $96 million in investments and will benefit more than 13,000 people.

During her address, Rousseff thanked the contribution made by social housing movements when the Minha Casa, Minha Vida program was created and urged the organizations to keep "suggesting and complaining" for the program to be improved. "You showed that it was possible to build good homes."
