Rousseff outraged at senator's alleged plea bargain involving her name
Chief of Staff Jaques Wagner said this Thursday (Mar. 3) that President Dilma Rousseff is outraged at the news that Senator Delcídio do Amaral (member of the Workers' Party) had agreed to a plea bargain, in which he declared that the president and former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva were aware of the corruption scheme at Petrobras. The news report was published by weekly magazine Isto É.
For Jaques Wagner, if the senator aggred to a plea bargain, his testimonies should be confidential. The Attorney General's Office and the Supreme Court are responsible for investigating a possible leak, which he considered "extremely serious" and "intolerable".
According to the minister, plea bargain testimonies should be maintained in secrecy. "I understand that the allegations lost its actual value to the legal process, and became what has often become: public execration," said the minister.
“This is a very serious crime, because they [plea bargain testimonies] are in court secrecy, they should have been directly submitted to Justice Teori Zavascki, rapporteur in the case of Operation Car Wash at the Supreme Court, and the one presiding the session. And suddenly they [testimonies] are published. Maybe the magazine had the merit and got it [the information]," he declared.
For Wagner, the senator's alleged testimonies "have no consistency" and are surrounded by "a lot of dust." "Has anyone seen any evidence? No, I only saw assumptions, of which he himself is the informer, the witness, he is everything."And he concluded: "But I will not join in that discussion."
Delcídio do Amaral was the government's Senate leader when he was arrested under Operation Car Wash, on November 25, after a recording emerged in which he offers former Petrobras director Nestor Cerveró a monthly $13 thousand plus an escape plan in exchange for Cerveró not to agree to a plea bargain deal with the Prosecution Office. A member of the Workers' Party (PT), the senator temporarily resigned.
In the afternoon, Senator Delcídio do Amaral's defense released a public statement in which he "does not confirm" the information published today (Mar. 3) by magazine Isto É.
