Senators to debate rapporteur's recommendation on Rousseff impeachment today
The Senate's Special Committee on Impeachment is meeting at 10 am this Thursday (May 5) to discuss the document with the recommendations of Senator Antônio Anastasia, the rapporteur on the committee proceedings in Senate, presented yesterday. The defense of President Dilma Rousseff is expected to open the session with its final arguments for dropping the case.
Attorney-General José Eduardo Cardozo will have an hour to make his last statement on Rousseff's behalf before the vote that may suspend her for up to 180 days. Next, the head of the impeachment committee will be the first to make his statements in debating the report. Pro-government senators said they were planning to challenge the fact that Anastasia addressed Rousseff's accounting practices of 2013 and 2014 in his report, i.e. allegations taking place before her current term of office.
The government supporters are considering tabling a dissenting opinion about the continuation of proceedings, or even challenging the rapporteur's recommendation in the Supreme Court. The reaction could spark a controversy with opposition senators who extolled the rapporteur's arguments as “technical”.
Anastasia denied adding new facts to his report announced Wednesday (4) that recommends the continuation of the proceedings against Rousseff.
The debates are expected to last all day. On Friday (6), the date the committee will vote on the report, only the party leaders will be allowed to make instruction remarks as they proceed to the vote, but the report will not be discussed again. The vote should take place at the Constitution and Justice Committee room, which is equipped with an electronic voting system.
