Citizens should be comforted by justice system, says Brazil supreme court head
Brazil's Supreme Court (STF) Chief Justice Cármen Lúcia said today (Dec. 5) that it is the duty of the country's justice system to pacify society, and should provide citizens with a source of “comfort” in a moment marked by so much intolerance towards the inefficiency of the Brazilian government.
“The State has been our only option. It's either democracy or war. And the role of Justice is no other than to bring peace. We have therefore the direct commitment of being responsible for making suggestions, proposals, projects, flowcharts so that we're able to offer some comfort to the Brazilian people, in whatever way we can,” said Cármen Lúcia, who leads both the STF and the National Council of Justice (CNJ).
Cármen Lúcia, who spoke at the opening ceremony of an annual meeting in which the Judiciary branch sets the goals for the upcoming meeting, urged judges to unite in a moment of “extreme difficulty” and establish targets and public policies for the Judiciary, “not with partiality, but with the values of democracy.”
The ultimate commitment of the Judiciary, she said, is to preserve society's faith in the justice system, in order to avert the risk of having citizens start doing “justice with their own hands... which is nothing but the exercise of revenge, which goes against civilization; it's the opposite of civilization.”
