A federal prosecutor in Brazil charged Adélio Bispo de Oliveira, who attacked Brazilian presidential hopeful Jair Bolsonaro, with personal assault for political discontent. The accused is alleged to put the democratic regime at risk in his attempt to interfere in the result of the elections by seeking to assassinate one of the contenders in the presidential race.

The prosecutor who penned the charges stated that Adélio Bispo planned the attacked in advance in a bid to remove Bolsonaro from the race. The lawyer availed himself of testimonies heard from the accused plus evidence procured during the investigation, like his navigation history, text messages, and past involvement in politics. The allegations highlighted signs of strong criticism on Bispo’s part against Bolsonaro as well as his political views.

“The purpose of the act was to physically eliminate the candidate from the race for the presidency, removing him from the polls in an attempt to prevent his ideas, in case they are backed by the majority, from starting to inform the public policies of the federal government,” said Marcelo Borges de Mattos Media, the prosecutor who authored the motion.

He goes on, “The goal, in short, taking into account the prospective elections of him with whom ‘he radically disagrees’ was to determine the result of the elections—not through the polls, but through violence.”

Stabbing attack

Jair Bolsonaro is the far-right candidate of the Social Liberal Party (PSL). The candidate has made a collection of statements attacking homosexuals and other minorities throughout his career as lower house representative.

Bolsonaro was stabbed while campaigning in Juiz de Fora, in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, on September 6. He was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. Next, he was relocated to Albert Einstein Hospital, in São Paulo, where other procedures were performed. The presidential hopeful spent the remainder of the month recovering and was discharged on Saturday (29).

The Federal Police has investigated the case since the day it was perpetrated. On September 25, a new inquiry was opened on the case. The nature and motivation of the new case have not been disclosed.
