President Jair Bolsonaro said today (Nov 1) that he will not attend the inauguration ceremony of Argentina’s new President Alberto Fernández, to take place in Buenos Aires on December 10. Fernández won the elections in his leftist coalition Everybody’s Front, and his running mate is Senator Cristina Kirchner, former president of the country.

Bolsonaro opposes Kirchner and supported the re-election of President Mauricio Macri, defeated in the polls last Sunday (Oct. 27).

“I backed [Macri], but let’s move ahead. There’s no retaliation on my part. I hope [Fernández and Kirchner] keep doing politics with us as Macri did until now,” Bolsonaro said, while leaving the Alvorada presidential palace this morning.

The president failed to specify, however, if any authority will be sent in his place, like vice-President Hamilton Mourão, or Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo.
