President Jair Bolsonaro said Thursday (Sep. 3) in his weekly broadcast on social media that he will personally decide the parameters for the adoption of 5G technology in Brazil. The current projection is to have the auction of licenses of 5G standards held by the country’s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) in the first half of 2021.

“We’re a world power. We have to have a robust intelligence system to be able to work in the near future,” he argued. “I’ll make it clear: I’m the one making the decision on 5G—not a third party, not people giving their opinions right and left,” he stressed.

At its maximum capability, the 5G technology is expected to offer Brazil extremely high internet speed—up to 20 times as fast as 4G. 5G standards will also be capable of keeping a massive number of devices connected at the same time.
