President Jair Bolsonaro is taking part in the Climate Summit, an online event organized by the US government, starting Thursday (Apr. 22) and ending tomorrow (23). Bolsonaro is part of a group of 40 heads of state and government, in addition to other authorities.

Also among the guests is Brazilian indigenous representative Sinéia do Vale.

The summit precedes the 26th Conference on Climate, COP26, to be held in November in Glasgow, Scotland. One of its main goals is to prevent the planet’s average temperature from rising above 1.5ºC this century.

In a letter sent to US President Joe Biden, President Jair Bolsonaro has committed to bring illegal deforestation to an end by 2030. He also recognized the increase in deforestation rates as of 2012 and said that both the state and society must step up their efforts to tackle this environmental crime.

In the letter, in addition to setting goals and commitments, Bolsonaro listed initiatives by Brazil in preserving the environment, like projects in bio-economy, land regularization, ecological and economic zoning, and payment for environmental services.
