Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro landed in Moscow today (Feb. 15) for a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The arrival takes place in the afternoon, as local time is an additional six hours from Brasília’s, shortly after Russia announced the withdrawal of a portion of his military troops from the border with Ukraine.

In Moscow, Bolsonaro is expected to meet Putin tomorrow (16) for a bilateral meeting, to be attended by interpreters only. The two should make a joint statement after the meeting and head for lunch. The assembly is slated to be held from 1 through 5 pm local time at the Kremlin, seat of the Russian government.

The Brazilian president is also set to join a gathering of Russian investors. Among the main topics to discussed on the trip is Brazil’s purchase of Russian fertilizers.

The visit should include the discussion of such topics as energy, defense, and agriculture, Bolsonaro said. Also to be debated are political, economic, and commercial ties between the two nations, which are part of the Brics, a bloc also encompassing China, South Africa, and India.

Bolsonaro is poised to stay in the Russian capital until Thursday (17), when he will head for Budapest, Hungary, to meet with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
