Political parties across Brazil have up to Friday (Aug 5) to hold their conventions and announce who is running for office in this year’s elections and what coalitions will be formed.

This year, the 34 parties registered in the country have been allowed to conduct their national assemblies as of July 20. After selecting their hopefuls, political parties as well as party federations and coalitions have up to August 15 to submit their candidacies. In the case of federations, conventions must be attended by all member parties.

By Thursday morning (4), only four presidential aspirants had been registered with the country’s electoral court: Felipe D’Avila (Novo), Léo Péricles (UP), Pablo Marçal (Pros), and Sofia Manzano (PCB).

More than 156.45 million Brazilians must head for the polls on October 2, when the nation starts choosing its next president as well as state governors, senators, and representatives at federal, state, district level. Party coalitions are only allowed for majority posts, where candidates with most votes win (president, governor, mayor, senator), not for proportional posts (representatives).
