Close to 300 agents from the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) are to be engaged in the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Their work will focus on the prevention and identification of nuclear risks and emergency situations, as well as the response to such incidents, the government agency announced.

The CNEN teams will be sent to venues and locations where training sessions will be held, in addition to the International Broadcasting Center (IBC) and the Olympic Village, in Rio de Janeiro. Detachments will also operate at football stadiums in five other host cities: Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Manaus. Salvador, and São Paulo.

The agents were trained by professionals from the United States Department of Energy last week. They are expected to use radiation detection equipment from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Apart from the CNEN agents, 3 thousand military men from the National Security Force, 500 health workers, and 150 Federal Police officers have been trained to employ the radiation detection devices.

CNEN had previously done a similar job at the Rio 2007 Pan American Games; the World Youth Day, held in 2013 also in Rio; the Confederations Cup that same year; and the World Cup, in 2014.

The Olympic Games are to kick off on August 3 and slated to end on August 21. The Paralympic Games, in turn, are to be held from September 7 to 18.
