According to a Ministry of Health report, the Mais Médicos (More Doctors) program saw a 105 percent increase in the number of professionals working in 2023, filling 28,200 more vacancies.

During the same period, the program expanded to cover 82 percent of the national territory, with 744 new municipalities joining and benefiting 86 million people.

The figures also reveal that all 34 indigenous healthcare units have been incorporated into the Mais Médicos program. "This is a significant advancement, considering the lack of care that this population has faced in recent years," stated the ministry. In the Yanomami indigenous territory, the number of professionals has increased from nine to 28. Overall, 977 new professionals are now involved in indigenous healthcare.

Regarding the professionals engaged in the program, the ministry stated that since its resumption in 2023, Mais Médicos has offered opportunities for professional development, training, and various incentives and benefits. The ministry noted that in previous editions, 41 percent of participants dropped out of the program “due to a lack of career prospects.”

Brazil’s government considers Mais Médicos a crucial national strategy for training specialists. The objective is to have a specialist on every family health team in the near future. Presently, there are over 50,000 family healthcare teams and over 10,000 family and community doctors nationwide.
