Unemployment rate reaches 8.6% between May and July

Compared with the same period last year, unemployment increased 26.6%

The unemployment rate between May and July 2015 stood at 8.6%, higher than the rate measured for the same period last year (6.9%).

Data, calculated as part of the National Household Continuous Sample Survey (PNAD Contínua), were released today (Sep. 29) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). They indicate that for the period between May and July about 8.6 million people were unemployed. The estimate is 26.6% higher than the same period in 2014 (6.8 million).

The survey also indicated that about 92.2 million people were employed during the same period. The data remained statistically stable compared with the same period last year.
