President Dilma Rousseff said today (Sep. 19) to a group of Brazilian and Swedish executives that the government is working to recover fiscal balance, and that Brazil is still “an attractive and safe option for investment,” with expansion potential in bilateral deals for fields like technology and health care.

The Brazilian head of state noted that Brazil-Sweden cooperation grew 45 percent in ten years and that ties could deepen even further. “We have to boost those figures and diversify the commercial agenda. There's potential for the inclusion of Brazilian manufactured goods and also for a stronger presence of Swedish manufactured products in our trade flow,” she argued.

According to Rousseff, the purchase of Swedish Gripen fighter jets from the Saab Group by the Brazilian Air Force consolidates relations between the two economies and could provide the model for deals in other sectors. In this case, the agreement includes the transference of technology to Brazil and the construction of a Saab factory in São Paulo.

The president also mentioned noteworthy trade proposals between Mercosur and the European Union, which may materialize in November after years of talks. “This agreement paves the way into the South American market for the European Union and for Sweden in particular. It will definitely serve as a platform for the rest of the continent,” she said.

From Sweden, the president is scheduled to fly to Finland, where she is to advance the mission of expanding trade ties.
