A 6.7% drop in motor vehicle production from August to September was the most substantial contribution to the 1.3% industrial output decline. The auto industry had previously reported a 9.8% drop in August according to the Monthly Industrial Survey released today (Nov. 4) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Fifteen of the 24 industries surveyed by IBGE saw lower production levels in September compared to August. Other major contributions came from machinery and equipment (-4.5%), metal products (-3.1%) and apparel and accessories (-4.2%).

Significant declines were also reported for foods (-0.5%), paper/pulp (-1.9%), and rubber/plastic (-1.6%).

Eight industries reported production growth, most notably oil products and biofuels (3.5%), mining and extraction (1%), and computer, electronics and optical products (4%).
