Rousseff: Government's goal is to balance budget and reduce inflation

President Dilma Rousseff reiterated on Wednesday (Jan. 21) that the government's goal is to rebalance the budget, reduce inflation, and rebuild Brazil's capacity of public and private investment.
"All the reforms that we have undertaken were to protect investments in social programs," declared the president during the opening ceremony of the Via Mangue east track, in Recife.
Rousseff said the country has been facing challenges since last year with "a major economic crisis", but pointed out that it is possible to change this scenario when society and government are able "to cooperate and have partnerships." "We have to work hard to resume growth in Brazil."
Not mentioning the impeachment proceedings against her initiated at the Chamber of Deputies, Rousseff noted that Brazil lives in a democracy where people can have different opinions and express them.
"All this is not only normal but virtuous. None of this prevents us from having agreements, unity, and joint action on some issues that are important to the Brazilian people. Democracy has this flexibility. It allows us to criticize, and meanwhile be able to carry out joint actions on some issues. For Brazil it is essential that we are able to act towards the same direction," she reported.
