A survey by the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras) points to growth of 4.95% in consumption among Brazilian families in the month of October, compared to September. There was, however, a deceleration of 0.24% compared to October 2020. In the accumulated result for the first ten months of the year, an increase of 3.14% was registered.

The survey includes the Abrasmercado index, a measurement made with a basket of 35 widely consumed products, such as food (including beer and soft drinks), hygiene, beauty and household cleaning.

In October, spending on these products maintained the upward trend and closed at R$700.04, an increase of 2.20% compared to September. Compared to October last year, the basket was more expensive at 17.27%. Cuiabá presented the cheapest basket in the country (R$ 540.07), while Porto Alegre had the most expensive basket, in the amount of R$ 795.45.

The main villains of the high price, in the comparison of September with October of this year, were the tomato (28.77%), the potato (24.05%), the frozen chicken (6.33%), the roasted coffee and ground (6.11%) and sugar (4.79%). Onion, beans and tomato extract had the biggest losses, with falls of 5.17%, 2.27% and 1.95%, respectively.
