Vocational schools lose 60% of spots this year
The National Program for the Access to Technical Education and Employment (Pronatec) is expected to offer over 1 million admission spots this year, Education Minister Renato Janine has announced. Compared to last year, when more than 2.5 million vacancies were made available, the cut totals approximately 60%.
Created in 2011 with the purpose of expanding students' access to vocational and technical education in Brazil, Pronatec is among the initiatives affected by a nearly $3 billion reduction approved by Brazil's Ministry of Education (MEC) in this year's federal budget.
When questioned over President Rousseff's intention to create 12 million openings in the plan up to the end of her second term of office, Janine said that this is an exceptional year. “We've gone from $5.84 billion in MEC's 2002 budget to well above $32 billion now. We'll be able to keep growing after the vigor of the economy is restored,” he argued.
