In the fourth round of South American qualification for the 2026 World Cup, Brazil's national soccer team faced a 2-0 defeat against Uruguay. The match occurred on Tuesday (Oct. 17) at Montevideo's Centenario Stadium.

Following this first loss in the current edition of the Qualifiers, the Brazilian team dropped to third place in the standings with seven points, trailing Uruguay in second place and leaders Argentina.

Coach Fernando Diniz's team displayed limited inspiration in the first half, struggling to construct effective attacking plays. Brazil failed to land a single shot on goal and witnessed Uruguay take the lead in the 41st minute with a header from Darwin Núñez.

Furthermore, the Brazilian side faced another setback just before halftime when Neymar had to be substituted in the 44th minute due to a left knee injury, leaving the field on a stretcher. Despite Neymar's subpar performance in the match, his departure, and the introduction of striker Richarlison disrupted Brazil's play, leading to an even worse second-half performance.

In the face of this disorganized Brazilian side, Uruguay managed to widen their lead with a goal from De la Cruz in the 31st minute.

Brazil's upcoming matches in South American qualifying will be against Colombia on November 16 at Barranquilla's Estadio Metropolitano and Argentina five days later at Rio de Janeiro's Maracanã.
