Brazil sets delegation for Paris 2024 with record female majority

The Brazilian Olympic Committee has finalized the list of athletes representing the country at the Paris Games. Brazil will compete in 39 sports, including judo, the country's most successful Olympic sport. For the first time in history, women will outnumber men. Of the 277 qualified athletes, 55 percent are women, an 8 percent increase from the last edition of the Games in Tokyo.

One factor contributing to the increased number of women athletes in Paris is the qualification in team sports, which offer the highest number of spots. Brazilian women will compete in soccer, volleyball, handball, and rugby, while the men are only guaranteed places in volleyball and basketball.

Additionally, many of Brazil's top athletes and podium favorites are women, including Rebeca Andrade (artistic gymnastics), Beatriz Ferreira (boxing), Rayssa Leal (skateboarding), Ana Marcela Cunha (open water swimming), and the duo Ana Patrícia and Duda (beach volleyball).

"There is a real chance we will have more female medalists than male for the first time at the Olympic Games. We already saw this at the Pan Santiago Games, where women outnumbered men in medals for the first time at a multi-sport event. The likelihood of this happening in Paris is also high, as we have more women in the delegation and many with recent outstanding performances on the international stage," said Rogério Sampaio, director-general of the Brazilian Olympic Committee and head of the Paris 2024 Mission.

Olympic Village

The artistic gymnastics team will be the first from Brazil’s delegation to enter the Olympic Village, located in the Saint Denis district, a Parisian suburb along the River Seine. The Brazilian athletes are scheduled to arrive in Paris next Thursday (Jul. 18).
