In a ceremony reserved for family members, the body of cameraman Santiago Andrade was cremated this Thursday (Feb. 13) at the Memorial do Carmo, in Rio de Janeiro. Dozens of journalists attended the wake and many sported T-shirts with the message “It could have been any of us.” Andrade died on Monday (Feb. 10), after he was hit by a squib set off while he was covering a demonstration over bus fare hikes in downtown Rio de Janeiro.

His daughter, Vanessa Andrade, also a journalist, said she will demand safety for professionals from Bandeirantes TV and stressed her father’s death will not be in vain: “I won’t let this story die.”

Bandeirantes TV Journalism Director Fernando Mitre admitted the work routine of journalists should be revised and called for investigations into the crimes committed during street protests: “We’re suffering the impact of this profound emotion, but we need to readdress the whole issue. We can’t tolerate the present situation.”

The Rio de Janeiro Union of Journalists has contacted the Public Prosecution Office for Labor Affairs and declaring that an investigation should be launched into the working conditions in Bandeirantes TV in Rio de Janeiro, as Andrade had no supporting team and was not wearing any protective equipment when he was hit by the flare.

All other Rio-based news agencies will be ordered to fulfill all basic safety regulations for the protection of their own employees.
