The Brazilian population has grown past the 204-million mark this year. According to estimates of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released today (Aug. 28), the country had a population of 204,450,649 on July 1st. Last year, the estimated population was 202,768,562.

The IBGE also reported the estimated populations of all 27 states and Brazilian municipalities. São Paulo has the largest state population, 44.4 million people. Five other states have populations that exceed 10 million: Minas Gerais (20.87 million), Rio de Janeiro (16.55 million), Bahia (15.2 million), Rio Grande do Sul (11.25 million) and Paraná (11.16 million).

Also according to the update, three states continue to have populations smaller than one million, all of them located in the Amazon region, northern Brazil: Roraima (505,700), Amapá (766,700) and Acre (803,500).
