The movie The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão, by Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz, beat 11 other films Tuesday (27) and will represent Brazil in the race for the an Oscar, the award granted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in Los Angeles. The announcement was made by the Brazilian Film Academy. The picture will compete with four nominees for best foreign film next year.

The premiere will be held Friday (Aug 20) at the 29th Cine Ceará – Iberian–American Film Festival, in Fortaleza, state capital of Ceará.

The flick is based on Martha Batalha’s novel of the same title, and tells the story of the Gusmão sisters—Eurídice and Guida. Eurídice is a young and talented introvert. Guida, however, is her social opposite. Both live in under a strict patriarchal regime, which makes them take two very distinct directions.

Guida decides to run away from home with her boyfriend, whereas Eurídice struggles to become a musician and cope with the responsibilities of adult life and a loveless marriage. The film debuts in Brazil on October 31.

Cast

Brazilian stars Fernanda Montenegro and Carol Duarte share the role of Eurídice, with Julia Stockler as Guida.

The last time Brazil ran in this category was 1999, with Walter Salles’s Central do Brasil, which also featured Fernanda Montenegro, nominated for best actress that year.

The foreign movies to make it to the Oscars will be disclosed on January 13. The award ceremony is slated to take place on February 9.
