The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that the Brazilian government has been closely monitoring the parliamentary election held Sunday (Dec. 6) in Venezuela, and “congratulates the people, the political forces, and the Venezuelan authorities on the orderly and peaceful election held.”

“The normalcy of the process, such as verified by a number of missions of election observers, including the UNASUR [the Union of South American Nations], the high voter turnout, and the acknowledgment of the results by all parties are a significant victory of democracy, for Venezuela and the whole region,” the ministry said in a statement released Monday (7).

The Brazilian government stressed the importance of respecting the people's choice in the polls and reiterated their willingness to continue working with Venezuela “to deepen bilateral relations and contribute to dialogue, democratic stability, development, and prosperity in the neighboring country, a partner in MERCOSUR and a key player in Latin American integration.”

The Venezuelan opposition won 99 seats out of a total 167 that make up the National Assembly – against 46 of President Nicolás Maduro's United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), obtaining a majority in parliament for the first time in 16 years.
