The Brazilian government expressed “deep consternation” over the damage caused by the severe earthquake that hit Mexico and led to the deaths of over a hundred people. The note, issued by the Foreign Ministry Tuesday (Sep. 19), says Brazilians have been reported among the victims so far. The government sent its condolences to the victims' family members and expressed solidarity towards the people and the government of Mexico.

With the aid of Brazil's Consulate-General in Mexico and the Consular Assistance Division (DAC) in Brasília, the Foreign Ministry is to keep a close watch on the developments of the tragedy brought about by the second seismic shock that struck Mexico in less than two weeks.

Earthquake

At 1:14 pm (local time), a magnitude 7 earthquake rocked central Mexico with its epicenter near Axochiapan, Morelos state.

According to Mexican authorities, over 119 people were killed. Deaths were reported in the states of Morelos and Puebla, as well as in the country's capital city, whose mayor, Miguel Ángel Mancera, said 30 people died and 44 buildings collapsed.
