Brazil Bar Association files new impeachment petition at lower house
This Monday (Mar. 28) the Green Room of the Chamber of Deputies was the scene of protests for and against President Dilma Rousseff's impeachment, shouting chants to one another. Protests were motivated by the impeachment petition filed by the Federal Council of Brazil's Bar Association (OAB) submitted to the Chamber of Deputies by Association's President Cláudio Lamachia.
Lawyers and protesters opposed to the request chanted slogans, like "There will no coup." While protesters for Rousseff's impeachment responded with "Down with PT (Workers' Party)." There was a turmoil and shoving on both sides.
OAB's Federal Council decided to file a new impeachment petition, including Senator Delcídio do Amaral's plea bargain. The stance adopted by the association caused a reaction to many members of the Association and other lawyers, who issued a manifesto demanding the institution to consult with its members about submitting the document.
The manifesto considers OAB's petition a "brutal mistake" and says that "this decision, due to its severity and consequences, reminds us of the mistake made by the Association in 1964, and it could never have been taken without extensive consultation with Brazilian lawyers."
