Brazil: SARS on the rise, COVID-19 still prevalent among cases, deaths
States across all Brazilian regions are registering an increase in the number of cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), with a prevalence of the novel coronavirus, per a new report released Thursday (Dec. 22) by research foundation Fiocruz. With end-of-year celebrations drawing near, doctors’ recommendation is to remain careful regarding situations of risk of infection.
The data, which cover December 11–17, indicate a surge in cases across all age groups, with greater emphasis on adults. COVID-19 still prevail.
In the last four epidemiological weeks, the prevalence among positive cases for respiratory viruses was 80.2 percent Sars-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Among deaths, the incidence was also 80.2 percent.
The study shows a growth in the amount of SARS cases in the long-term, but the slowdown in the national curve was maintained, which experts link to a recent drop in SARS cases in the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
